CHAPTER 16

Lakin watches with intense satisfaction as men scramble to figure out why the engine started an emergency shut down. It took her a lot longer than she liked to figure out where the engine room was. Several conduits were much too small for even her lithe body to get through so she was forced to find crawl spaces between walls and floors. It was much dirtier and tighter work, full of piping, optic cables, and life-support tubes to wiggle around.

Once she finally got to the starboard engine, she almost giggled with delight. The control room relays were right there in the wall she dropped down into. She didn’t even need to get out of her hiding space.

Pulling the long, thin metal needle tool she stole from Dalt’s pouch when he was having his flashback, she starts poking around. She’s used the tool enough times now to mess with the enclosure gates that it’s a familiar weight in her hand. Figuring out what cable, wire, switch, and transponder doesn’t take long. Once she’s confident in her knowledge, she triggers the one that tells the engine that it’s overheating and needs to shut down. The entire ship goes down for a moment, then emergency lighting comes back on.

Alarms sound through the ship, and she hears men scramble into the room all shouting at each other and sounding panicked rattles. She can’t make out much of what they’re saying over the sound of the noise their backplates are making.

Then they start arguing with each other. Even better!

Any noise she might make is covered by the men in the next room deciding it’s a better idea to be aggressive with each other than figure out what’s wrong with their ship. The next thing she needs to do is find Holian and figure out a place where they can hole up until the cavalry arrives. She wishes Dalt made it onto the ship with her. With him there she could come up with a plan to take the ship. But she knows better than to wish for things that aren’t available. She has to work with what’s on hand and for right now, that’s just her.

She catches a break when the men start arguing about moving Holian. One man wants to take him to the bridge.

“Having him on the bridge will only complicate things,” the other man says. “Leave him in the storage locker. It’s secured from the outside, and we can flush the whole room if we have to get rid of him.”

That makes her blood run cold. She needs to get to Holian before any of these aspiring anarchists decide he’s too dangerous to keep alive. She listens carefully but doesn’t get any more clues from the two men.

When they move off, she makes her way back to an empty room so she can climb out of the wall. There’s a small display near a closed door so she taps on it, relieved it doesn’t have any locks. After a little while, she manages to pull up a rough map of the ship.
